Do I need eye drops to dilate my pupils today?
What is an eye dilation?
Eye drops or spray are used to make the pupil larger so that the doctor can check the health of the inside of the eye.
Often it’s need to double-check glasses prescription in children.
Do I have to get my eyes dilated?
A dilation is required if this is your first eye exam at our office. Children often require a dilation at their first exam to ensure their eyeglass prescription is accurate. A dilation is required if you have progressive myopia, flashes of light or floaters, part of your visual field missing,headaches, diabetes or other health problems
How long does it take for the drops to dilate the pupils?
The pupils take 20-30 minutes to dilate after we put the drops in. You can select the glasses while you wait.
In 30 minutes, we will call your name to go into the dilation room and the doctor will check the health of the inside of your eyes.
What are the side effects?
For 2-4 hours after the eye drops, use sunglasses outside since your eyes will be sensitive to the sun and your near vision will be blurry.
We have complimentary dilation sunglasses at the front desk if you forgot your sunglasses
Does it hurt?
The drops burn a little for a minute and the light is a little bright.
Can I drive or go to school/work after a dilation?
Usually, patients can drive since dilation typically affects near vision only. However, if you do not feel safe driving, please make arrangements for transportation. You can return to work or school after the dilation. You may want to change your dilation if you have something important to read such as a test. If you need a note to excuse your absence, please ask at the front desk.
Please inform the doctor at the beginning of the eye examination, if you cannot have your eyes dilated today.
